Homeowners’ Coverage

Homeowner’s insurance is not required by law in Florida, but if you finance your home, your lender may require you to have a homeowner’s insurance policy in place1. A typical homeowner’s insurance policy will include the following six types of coverage:

  • Coverage A (Dwelling Coverage): This coverage is the central coverage included in a homeowner’s policy and will generally have the highest limit of types of coverage on your policy. It protects the structural components of your home from damage and covers damage to the home that impacts walls, floors, ceilings, home systems, and more1.
  • Coverage B (Other Structures): This coverage protects structures that are not attached to your home, such as a detached garage, shed, or fence2.
  • Coverage C (Personal Property): This coverage protects your personal belongings, such as furniture, clothing, and electronics, from damage or loss1.
  • Coverage D (Loss of Use): This coverage provides financial assistance for additional living expenses if your home becomes uninhabitable due to a covered loss1.
  • Coverage E (Personal Liability): This coverage provides protection if you are found legally responsible for causing bodily injury or property damage to someone else1.
  • Coverage F (Medical Payments): This coverage provides payment for medical expenses incurred by someone who is injured on your property, regardless of who is at fault1.

It is important to understand what these coverage types cover and what they exclude. You can also consider purchasing additional policies if you live in an area with higher flood risks.
